History
Multiple and severe traffic accidents (some fatalities) have occurred at this location. High seasonal traffic volumes also create congestion here. Both result in delays and queues of idling cars. Resident's of Incline Village identified the intersection's problems at a community-visioning meeting in 2007.

Design
The initial discussions included the idea of a roundabout (traffic circle). This design is being adopted, reflecting the community's original concept and NDOT's research of successful implementations in many cities and towns. (For more information on roundabouts, click here to visit the NDOT website.) Concepts for the roundabout’s center are being solicited from residents. They're invited to email ideas to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Goals/Benefits
The Incline Gateway project is being developed to improve:

  • Intersection Safety - Reducing the frequency and severity of traffic accidents is the primary goal. Preventing traffic congestion and side-street traffic overflow will be a secondary benefit.
  • Tahoe Basin Air and Water Quality - Avoiding delays due to accidents or traffic congestion will minimize the number of idling vehicles and resulting emission and noise pollution. Maintaining smoother traffic flow may also alleviate some roadway deterioration and associated erosion/runoff, helping protect the lake's clarity.

Although not a goal, per se, a new, visually appealing entrance to the Tahoe Basin, which creates a more favorable first impression for those arriving from Reno, will be another plus.

Timing
TTD Outreach Specialist Lee Weber-Koch, of Weber & Associates, and members of the community are currently meeting with local associations to share ideas and gather feedback.

The project is being submitted to the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency for permit approval, and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for utility relocation. Conditional to these permits, groundbreaking and the utility work are slated for fall 2011. The tentative completion date for the Incline Gateway is late 2012.
